We Cann... House Points

At Cann Bridge School, our We Cann… House Points system nurtures a strong sense of belonging, teamwork, and positive competition across our school community.

All learners in Key Stages 2–4 belong to one of our four houses:

  • Smeaton (Red)
  • Tamar (Blue)
  • Mayflower (Yellow)
  • Argyle (Green)

Learners are randomly allocated to a house in Key Stage 2 and remain in the same house through to Key Stage 4. This consistency helps learners remember their house, develop a sense of identity and pride, and ensures that each class includes a mix of learners from different houses—promoting inclusivity and collaboration across the school.

Annually, each house has a House Captain, usually a learner in Year 11, who is voted for by their house peers. Captains represent their house, model our Behaviour Values, encourage their peers, and proudly collect the house trophy if their house wins overall for the term.

Learners earn House Points by demonstrating our Behaviour Values, which were chosen by the learners themselves. These values encourage everyone to:

  • Be our best
  • Be kind
  • Be friendly
  • Be helpful

Achievements are recognised through the following award system:

  • 1 Point – House Token
  • 5 Points – Coloured Star
  • 10 Points – Golden Star

House Tokens can be awarded by any member of staff, while Coloured Stars are presented by senior leaders. The highest accolade, the Golden Star, affectionately known as a "Shane Star", is proudly awarded by our Headteacher.

Once earned, learners place their tokens into their House collection tube in Reception. This highly visible system promotes transparency, encourages healthy competition, and gives learners a genuine sense of pride in their achievements.

Class Teachers maintain weekly tally sheets, which are submitted each week to enable cumulative totals to be tracked for individual pupils and Houses throughout each term.

During our Friday assembly, weekly House totals are announced and celebrated. At the end of each term, the winning House selects a reward, such as:

  • A mufti day wearing House colours
  • A movie afternoon with popcorn

Our School Council is currently reviewing these rewards and exploring new, inclusive options. Future opportunities may include learners exchanging House Points for activities, experiences, privileges, or small rewards.

Throughout the year, we also hold special House events and activities, bringing learners together to participate in team challenges, celebrations, and shared experiences. These events help to strengthen relationships, encourage teamwork, and foster a strong sense of belonging and school spirit.

All staff take great pride in celebrating learners' successes, and we remain committed to continually developing our House Point system so that every achievement, no matter how big or small, is recognised, valued, and celebrated.
