Radio Cann Bridge will be launching in 2026. This exciting and innovative portable radio station has been designed to give every learner a voice. Because the equipment is mobile, pupils can record, create and broadcast content from any classroom or learning space, making it a powerful and flexible tool for communication, creativity and engagement across the whole school.
This project has been made possible through the generosity of charitable donations and fundraising. Building on the success of our DJ Club during Personal Development Club sessions, we have been able to expand this into a whole‑school resource that benefits learners of all ages and levels of need.
Radio Cann Bridge will showcase the fantastic work, interests and personalities of our pupils through regular broadcasts. All content is chosen and created by learners, including:
- Class‑selected music playlists
- Jokes, quizzes and competitions
- Interviews with staff, pupils and visitors
- School news and event updates
- Reviews, stories and poems
- Learner‑led features and creative segments
Classes will be able to listen during snack times, transitions or playtimes, using the broadcasts as a motivating and enjoyable way to practise listening, communication and shared attention.
A Highly Inclusive Learning Resource
Radio Cann Bridge has been intentionally designed to be fully accessible to pupils with a wide range of communication profiles and physical needs. Our setup allows learners to:
- Plug in their AAC devices (e.g. GridPad, iPad with communication apps) so they can present, introduce songs or deliver radio features in their own voice.
- Use switches to make choices, trigger jingles, change tracks or operate simple recording functions.
- Use alternative access methods such as eye gaze, touch screens or partner‑assisted scanning.
- Record in sensory‑appropriate spaces, reducing anxiety and maximising participation.
- Communicate through multimodal methods, including symbol‑supported scripts, signing, expressive sounds or pre‑recorded phrases.
This commitment to accessibility ensures that every learner—regardless of communication style, mobility needs or sensory profile—can take part meaningfully.
A Learning Experience Led by Our Pupils
Our older learners will play a central role in developing Radio Cann Bridge. Their involvement will include planning content, experimenting with different radio formats, learning how to use microphones and recording equipment, and exploring media production both in school and through visits to local radio organisations.
Pupils will take on roles that match their strengths and interests, such as:
- Presenting and interviewing
- Script writing and storytelling
- Sound editing and technical setup
- Operating microphones and recording devices
- Organising playlists and scheduling broadcasts
Through this hands‑on experience, learners will develop a wide range of communication, social and vocational skills that support their Preparation for Adulthood, including:
- Confidence when speaking, interacting and sharing ideas
- Teamwork, turn‑taking and joint problem solving
- Strengthened writing, reading and listening skills
- Safe and purposeful use of industry‑standard equipment
- Exploration of interests linked to future training or employment
- Opportunities to celebrate their work with peers, families and the wider community
A Powerful Tool for Communication and Interaction
Radio Cann Bridge provides meaningful, real‑life experiences that support expressive and receptive communication. Its portable design means pupils can record and contribute in spaces that suit their sensory, emotional or physical needs.
The radio station supports pupils to:
- Communicate in a safe, supported and motivating environment
- Develop expressive and receptive language skills
- Share preferences, thoughts and ideas
- Connect with peers across the school
- Improve literacy through scripting, rehearsing and reading
- Develop independence and problem‑solving abilities
- Engage families by sharing content beyond the classroom
- Make meaningful choices using AAC, symbols or switches
With strong cross‑curricular links, Radio Cann Bridge gives learners a genuine platform where their voices are heard, valued and celebrated.
Safety and Broadcast Standards
To ensure safe and appropriate participation, we follow these standards:
- No live broadcasts: All content is pre‑recorded, reviewed and approved before airing.
- Only first names and class groups are used, when appropriate.
- Broadcasts are available only via the Cann Bridge School website, ensuring access remains within the school community.
